Notre Dame, Ind. – Medalist Ariya Jutanugarn, 14, of Thailand easily advanced on Wednesday to the second round of match play in the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links at the 6,092-yard, par-71 Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame.

Play was suspended for three hours due to a powerful storm that rolled through northwest Indiana, but all 32 first-round matches were completed.

Jutanugarn, who tied the WAPL qualifying mark with a 36-hole total of 135 (seven under par) overwhelmed Augusta James, 17, of Canada, 7 and 6. James had taken the 64th and final match-play berth in a playoff late Tuesday, only to face a medalist who had finished 17 strokes lower in stroke-play qualifying.

Driving the ball startling distances, Jutanugarn went ahead to stay at the second hole. She was 5 up at the turn. The youngster, however, was not happy with her play. Not good, she said. My irons, not good. I want to make birdies tomorrow.

Jutanugarn had two birdies on the day. She hit a 5-iron to 3 feet at the eighth hole and made the putt for a 5-up lead. James conceded her 10-foot birdie putt at the 10th and the match ended two holes later.

Argentina-born Martina Gavier, 21, the No. 2 qualifier, had a tighter match. The senior-to-be at Kent State University defeated Jessie Jordan, 18, of Urbana, Ohio, 3 and 2. Gavier was 1 up at the turn but both played loose golf on the second nine. At No. 14, Gavier missed a chance to take a dormie-4 lead. She was 3 up when she fired at the flagstick on the par-3 hole. Her ball fell just short into a bunker and the hole was halved with bogeys. Gavier eventually won the match at the 16th.

I was just a little too aggressive, Gavier said. I’m growing and learning every day.

Kimberly Kim, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and runner-up in this championship in 2006 and 2009, won despite an odd incident on the seventh hole. Kim was 3 up when she mistakenly drove from the adjacent 16th tee.

When a spectator informed Kim she had teed off on the wrong hole, she said, Oh, darn, that stinks.

Kim then stopped Hoey from making the same mistake. Rules officials informed Hoey she could require Kim to hit another drive from the seventh tee, which she did. There was no penalty. Hoey could have forced Kim to play her first ball, a difficult task since the 16th and seventh holes are separated by several acres of forest. Kim, a member of the victorious 2008 and 2010 USA Curtis Cup Teams, won the hole with a par and then won the match, 4 and 3.

Two of Kim's 2010 Curtis Cup teammates also advanced. Cydney Clanton of Concord, N.C., defeated Kathryn Roger, 4 and 3, while Stephanie Kono of Honolulu, Hawaii, held of Seohee Moon, 1 up. Kono was a semifinalist at the 2008 WAPL.

But Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., also a semifinalist at the 2008 WAPL and last year's U.S. Women's Amateur, was not so fortunate. She fell to Victoria Fallgren of Lakewood, Calif., 3 and 1.

The championship continues with two more rounds of match play on Thursday. The championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole final on Saturday.
